The Tribulations of Traveling to Copenhagen

Copenhagen?! Wait, I thought we were going to London!

Such is the life of the traveling musician, ever changing and unpredictable.
The day before Django and I left Port Townsend, we found out that we were to meet Simon at Heathrow, wait a few hours and catch a plane to Copenhagen together. So now we were set to have a really long day.

We made the 2 1/2 hour journey to the airport in Seattle and got on the first leg of our flight to the place where we would stop for the first night of our journey.

Balmy Minneapolis.

Minneapolis?! Wait, I thought we were going to Copenhagen! Ah yes, due to a thunderstorm that we had to circumvent and which added 40 minutes to our flight, and due to the ridiculously close flight schedule (45 minute changeover) that DELTA airlines (yes, Delta airlines, jot it down) keeps, we missed our connecting flight to London. What was more infuriating was that there were several connecting flights that a large number of passengers on the plane had and when we landed they said "they are holding most of your flights for you". So I got off the plane, loaded the stroller with the carry-ons and the car seat, strapped Django onto my front and took off running across the airport. Finally found a cart driver who took us the rest of the way. When we got there, 4 of us had missed the flight to London, and the woman there said to me "we don't hold flights". Get your stories straight folks. Delta, spelled D-E-L-T-A.

So they booked us at the Ramada and gave us some food vouchers. Apparently this happens a lot with them.

So now we were going to miss our flight from London to Copenhagen (and a rare chance to fly WITH Simon) I asked if they could rebook us to Copenhagen, but the ticket lady said no, only to your original destination. Well, my wonderful sister got on the phone with them and while we were settling into our hotel, she got us on a flight to Denmark. Phew!

Here's Django trying out the bed in the first room they gave us. Smelled like smoke, so we got another with a bigger bed. (no, he didn't actually fall asleep so easily-- that would be someone else's child)

A new day, a fresh start. We get to the airport, check in, get to the gate and see that our flight to JFK in New York is delayed. Haha, here we go again. After a while, I see that it is unlikely we will make the connecting flight to Copenhagen. I get on the phone with Delta and voila! they rebook us on a flight from Minneapolis to CPH via Amsterdam. Yay! An hour later, we're on our way.
It's funny, but the easiest part of traveling with a 2 year old boy is waiting at the airport gate. They've got those great big windows and a world of entertainment going on outside. Airplanes, carts, flashing lights, lifts, trucks. Fantastic!

To those traveling with toddlers: I recommend bringing the car seat if they have their own seat on the plane. It worked out great! He was able to sleep a bit and I could relax. All in all, the flight was pretty good. I got to watch two movies, we did a bit of running up and down the aisles (when half the passengers were asleep mind you).

We arrived in Copenhagen at 8:45am (11:45pm at home, -9 hours) and Simon met us at the airport.

Django saw Simon as we came out, ran over to him saying "daddy!" and just held onto him for quite a while. I suppose five weeks is nearly an eternity when you're two.

next up.... sunny Denmark.

  1. I can share my own Delta horror stories. After the return flight from CZ this summer, I swore I'd neve fly with them again. Many of the same issues you faced, but I'm very glad you finally connected with Simon.
